| Applied Magnetics Corp., a
Goleta, CA-based disk-head manufacturing company,
used criteria developed by its quality department
when they selected Sigma SPC software from
Advanced Technologies, Bakersfield, CA. The criteria included user-friendliness, control conditions and reaction, statistical methodology, flexibility, and network compatibility. Potential programs were rated based on ease of use and level of results. Vic Ella, quality engineer for Applied Magnetics, explained what considerations influenced their decision. "We like the fact that this software was developed for online SPC use. Its internal control conditions and |
corrective action can be customized.
Additionally, we require automatic data
collection from our metrology equipment."
Since using Sigma, he added, "We've
experienced a significant reduction in
variability in some of the processes, up to 50%
in one case, and we have the ability to quickly
troubleshoot control problems." His advice for choosing SPC software: "Look for flexibility. No one software package fits everyone's needs. Important features include those that facilitate customized data acquisition, chart setup, and allow you to tap into your existing documents for online access to current procedures." --Nancy Chase |
